Mark E. Smith (1957 – 2018)
A true one-off, Salford’s finest poet and a man who truly challenged and changed the musical/cultural landscape with intelligent and cryptic lyrics; a visionary approach; a unique style and a truly original sound. Always confrontational, beyond prolific, true to his art, quintessentially Northern English and away from clichés and the snobbery of the rock ‘n’ roll circus. There’s no other songwriter that defined Manchester, Salford and The North like him. There will be no other. RIP Mark E. Smith. What an artist.
