Morning Smoke: In Euphoria (Mini Album)
Alejandro De Luna
Based in the not so warm coast of Brighton, these kids (between 18 and 19 years old) fascinated with reverbs and barricades of noise, certainly wrapped up some sonic tension embellished by impenetrable riffs and post-punk-like monotonous drums. Here is their solid debut mini album.
While ‘Blue Ribbons’ sounds like Robert Smith´s [The Cure] anguished voice experimenting with the captivating possibilities of dissonance, reverbs and feedback; tracks like ‘DYWD’ or ‘Tangerine’ are where Morning Smoke claim its virtue for an original sound – yet, clearly without leaving out some other influences: an encyclopedia of noise pop, shoegaze and a Jonathan Richman-like [The Modern Lovers] unconcerned vocal style.
The mini album has some reflective moments too. ‘In Euphoria’ – along with its piano – sets the tone of a somber melody before exploding into a post-rock-esque moment of darkened inspiration. Something similar happens with ‘Melancholy’, a song that could be described as The Modern Lovers turning gloomy.
Highly recommended.
